SPRINGFIELD, MA - Senior shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA) went three for five and drove in two runs as the Amherst College (15-12) baseball team pounded out 15 hits and snapped a four-game losing skid with a 7-4 win at non-league foe Springfield College (19-13) on Tuesday.
The Jeffs trailed 2-1 early on before roughing up Springfield starter Rick Armstrong for a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Amherst then rattled reliever Nathan Jyringi for another run in the seventh inning and three in the eighth to seal the victory. Meanwhile, Amherst sophomore starter Jonah Ansell (Oak Park, IL) allowed just six hits and three earned runs and took a tie game into the sixth inning before giving way to sophomore southpaw Chris Vecsey (Madison, NY), who gave up an earned run in seventh but took the win to improve to 3-1. Senior closer Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) then shut the door in the eighth and ninth for his first save of the season
Amherst senior third baseman Ryan Whitmarsh (Dalton, MA) added to his team-high .451 batting average with a pair of hits, including his team-leading fifth home run of the season, while first-year center fielder Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and senior left fielder Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) each went two for five with a run scored.
Amherst returns to action this Friday and Saturday for a huge three-game set against visiting NESCAC West Division Rival Middlebury College. The Jeffs and Panthers, who are tied for second place in divisional play with matching 4-4 conference marks, will play a single game Friday at 3:30 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
