Jeffs Post First Loss, 9-4, To St. Thomas

March 21, 2001

FT. MYERS, FL - The Amherst College baseball team (3-1) fell from the unbeaten ranks on Tuesday with a 9-4 loss to defending national runner-up St. Thomas College.

The Jeffs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Junior second baseman John Brody (Baltimore, MD) led off with a single, followed by a run-scoring double from catcher J.R. Drabick (Lebanon, NH). After a fielder's choice and with the St. Thomas infield playing back, sophomore outfielder Devin Haran (Basking Ridge, NJ) grounded out, scoring Drabick from third.

Amherst's bats remained fairly silent from there, scoring only one more run on a single by senior shortstop Jordan Krall (Encino, CA) in the sixth. Senior Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY), a second-team All-American last season, started his first game of the season and held St. Thomas scoreless through four innings, before allowing three runs in the fifth. St. Thomas then jumped on the Jeffs' bullpen for multiple runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to set the final score at 9-4.

Krall led the Jeffs at the plate with two hits and a walk, while junior right-hander Dave Krauser (Short Hills, NJ) took the loss in two innings of relief. Amherst will play Calvin College in a doubleheader Thursday at 11 a.m., also in Fort Myers.
