AMHERST, Massachusetts -- Amherst scored nine times in the first two innings to kick off a 12-6 romp over archrival Williams. Senior first-baseman Justin Cronk (Athens, GA) led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk and out the first of five Jeff runs on the board in the 1st. Mike Sullivan (Andover, MA) stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and pounded a three-run double into deep centerfield.
The Ephs struggled early with three errors by David Joyce (Freeport, ME) that resulted in three Amherst runs. But Williams got on the board with back-to-back-to-back singles in the 4th to cut the lead to 9-2.
Eph lead-off-men Joyce and Frank Carlow (Lexington, MA) both scored in the 9th to cut the deficit to 12-6. Relief-pitcher Mike Sweeney (Keene, NH) found himself with two outs, but the bases loaded as David Hodgeman (New Canaan, CT) stepped to the plate. Sweeney went up two-strikes on the second-baseman, but threw three balls for a full count. Sweeney held out for his second strikeout, both caught looking, to conclude the game.
Dan Blednick (Melville, NY) led the Jeffs with 4-4 hitting and two RBI. Centerfielder Dan Jin (Berkeley, CA) had four runs and two stolen bases as the Jeffs' leading hitter.
