PORTLAND, Maine -- Eastern Connecticut State University scored seven runs in the top of the ninth to eliminate Amherst from the NCAA New England Regional Tournament. The Warriors advance to the Championship game against Southern Maine, to be played tomorrow at noon.
Amherst tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 1st with a two-run homer by Josh Carroll (Winchester, MA), his fifth shot over the wall in the last eight games. Carroll's would be the first of four home runs by Amherst, who took as much as a 12-4 lead in the bottom of the 5th.
Mike Sullivan (Andover, MA) sent the second Jeff ball over the rightfield fence in the 3rd, scoring Carroll and pushing the lead to 5-3. Amherst then posted seven runs in the 5th, first on a 2 RBI double by Greg Berchelmann (St. Louis, MO), followed by a pair of homers by Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) and Justin Cronk (Atlanta, GA). Quattlebaum's three-run shot was the first of the freshman's rookie season, while Cronk's third of this senior year gave the Jeffs their biggest lead of the night.
The Warriors chipped into Amherst's comfort zone in the 6th with four runs.Graham Callaghan (Burlington, CT) pitched 4 2/3 innings and struck out five, including the 1-2-3 top of the 8th.
Amherst finishes the season with a 26-6 record while Eastern Connecticut betters its record to 31-12.
