Amherst Falls 23-3 in Winner's Game

Jeffs face winner of loser's game at 7:00pm tonight 

PORTLAND, Maine -- Second-seeded Southern Maine pounded Amherst 23-3 to advance to the Championship game of the NCAA New England Regional Tournament. Amherst wlll play again tonight in the double-elimination tournament against the winner of the Brandeis-Eastern Connecticut State University game, currently in progress. The winner of tonight's game earns the second spot in the Championship against Southern Maine, scheduled for tomorrow at noon.

The Jeffs committed two errors on the first two plays of the game to begin a four-run Husky 1st. Amherst committed its third and final error to close out the inning, but Southern Maine stayed hot at the plate, raking up 23 runs on 24 hits. Dan Jin (Berkeley, CA) made two phenomenal catches against the wind to hold off more Husky runs early in the game.

Amherst got on the board in the bottom of the 6th when Jin singled to centerfield to score Mike Grant (Mendon, MA). Grant had reached on the first Southern Maine error, and his run cut the lead to 17-1. The Jeffs capitalized on a second Husky miscue in the 7th as rightfielder Larry Miles (Darnestown, MD) reached 1st and scored on a long Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) double to the centerfield wall. The Jeffs' last run happened late in the 9th as Greg Berchelmann (St. Louis, MO) came home on a Josh Carroll (Winchester, MA) double.

Southern Maine betters its record to 34-8 while Amherst falls to 26-5.
