4th-Seeded Jeffs Upset Top-Seeded Brandeis, 8-3
PORTLAND, Maine -- Amherst took advantage of five Brandeis erros to defeat the top-seeded Judges 8-3 in Game One of the NCAA New England Regional Tournament. The Jeffs now advance to the winner's game tomorrow at noon in the double elimination tournament. The winner of the New England region will advance to the Division III College World Series, beginning next Saturday in Salem, Virginia.
Dan Jin (Berkeley, CA) went 2-for-5 for the day with 4 RBI, including a 2 run home run in the top of the 4th inning, his fifth of the season. The senior centerfielder began Amherst scoring in the 3rd with a line-drive down the third-base line to score Whit Griffinger (Piedmont, CA) and Mike Brendler (Swarthmore, PA). Jin finished out the third by scoring his first of two runs off aJosh Carroll (Winchester, MA) sacrifice.
Brandeis held off the Amherst scoring attack in the 2nd with an inning-ended double play. Dan Blednick (Melville, NY) was hit by a pitch after Carroll beat the throw to first, as did Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA) to load the bases.Mike Grant (Mendon, MA) hit a grounder to the third-baseman, who touched the bag with on the force and threw to first for the final out.
Jon Cross (Chevy Chase, MD) pitched 8 2/3 innings and struck out four. SeniorIan Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) disposed of the final batter to set up a rematch against Southern Maine. Cross betters his record to 4-1 while the Jeffs move up to 26-4 for the season.
