Cross Country & Track & Field Welcome Stuart Newstat to Coaching Staff

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College Athletics Department and the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs are happy to announce the recent hiring of Stuart Newstat as an assistant coach for the teams.

"I'm excited to welcome Stu Newstat to our coaching staff and the Mammoth track & field/cross country program," commented cross country head coach Cassie Funke-Harris. "Stu's energy and enthusiasm stood out among an outstanding group of candidates, and we're looking forward to the experience and knowledge he brings."

A 2014 graduate of DePauw University where he captained both the cross country and track & field teams during his senior seasons, Newstat joins the Mammoths' family following a two-year stint at his alma mater after acting as an assistant cross country coach and recruiting coordinator at Lake Forest College from 2015-2017.

Holding a USTFCCCA Level 1 Coaching Certificate, Newstat helped the Tigers to a 20th place team finish at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships while mentoring 15 All-Conference, seven All-Region and one All-America selection during his two seasons with the program. On the track & field side, Newstat helped the Tigers set three new school records, earn 13 Individual Conference Titles, 12 All-Conference selections, and two All-America nods.

"I want to thank Cassie Funke-Harris and Steve Rubin for bringing me onto their staff," said Newstat. "I'm thrilled to be joining Amherst and be given the opportunity to work with such an impressive group of student-athletes. Through the interview process, I could hear the excitement both Coach Funke-Harris and Coach Rubin had for this program and am ecstatic to join their vision to build upon the success the program has already achieved."

Welcome Stuart!
