CLEVELAND, Ohio. – For the 13th consecutive season, Amherst College has placed in the top-ten in the country when the final results of the IMG Learfield College Directors' Cup were announced Wednesday. The Mammoths took eighth place out of 338 Division III schools in the annual competition, which ranks schools who have reached the national level of competition in each NCAA sport.
Amherst compiled 879.25 points, scoring in five sports this spring, including a national runner-up finish in men's lacrosse. Men's and women's tennis and women's lacrosse each reached the quarterfinals of their respective tournaments, while women's track and field added to the total for their showing at the outdoor championships.
The Mammoths added their spring total to 357.25 points gained in the winter and 201.50 points collected in the fall. Men's and women's basketball and men's and women's soccer were all Sweet 16 participants and men's and women's swimming and diving both finished in the top ten nationally.
Men's cross country took sixth at this year's championship race in Wisconsin to bolster Amherst's fall positioning. Men's and women's indoor track and field scored points for Amherst in the winter as the Mammoths moved from 17th to 7th place by late April.
Amherst, who finished in the top-five eight consecutive years between 2007 and 2015, was one of four NESCAC schools in the top ten, led by Williams, who won their seventh consecutive Directors' Cup and 22nd in the last 23 years. The Ephs (1117 points) were led by two national titles (women's soccer, women's indoor track and field) and scored in 17 of 18 allowed sports, including 12 top-ten finishes.
Overall in Division III, you must count the following four sports – men's basketball and soccer, women's basketball and soccer – along with the next highest 14 (max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender.
Johns Hopkins finished as the 2018-19 runner-up with 1083.75 total points, scoring in 17 of 18 sports with three omissions (women's and men's lacrosse (DI), and men's outdoor track and field), including eight top-10 finishes. The Washington-St. Louis Bears improve upon the sixth-place finish in 2017-18 and finish the year with 1032.75 total points, led by eight top-five performances, including a national title in women's cross country and three runner-up finishes. Middlebury and Emory switch places from last year's final standings to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, with neither schools having scores omitted. The Panthers were guided by five top-five finishes including two national championships, women's field hockey and lacrosse. The Eagles closed the year fifth with a division-best three national championships – women's volleyball, women's swimming and diving and men's tennis.
Tufts finished just over five points better than Amherst to take seventh place, while Wesleyan, spurred by a national championship in women's tennis, finished in 14th.
With 1,126.5 points, Williams College was the Division III champions for the sixth straight season and the 21st time in 23 years it has been presented. With Middlebury's victory in 2011-12, only one time has the award not been won by a school from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).
The Ephs overtook MIT (1001.5), who were leading heading into the final rankings of the season.
The NESCAC again led all conferences with four institutions in the top 10, edging out the UAA, which finished with three top-ten schools (#3 Washington St. Louis, #5 Emory & #9 Chicago).
The Learfield IMG Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today to honor institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both women's and men's. The award was developed in 1993 for Division 1 and was expanded to Divisions II, III and NAIA schools in 1995, with each division receiving its own award.
