Honea, Sommer Announced as CoSIDA Academic All-District

AMHERST, Mass. – For the second consecutive year, Hayes Honea '19 has been selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Volleyball Teams, selected by College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).

Linebacker Andrew Sommer '19 was voted to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Football Teams by the members of CoSIDA.

A 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, Honea returns to the team with a 3.97 GPA in a double-major of Economics and Spanish.

She spent the spring semester studying abroad in Granada, then returned for her final year with the volleyball team which went 22-5 and reached the final of the NESCAC tournament.

Honea finished top-12 in the NESCAC in service aces and top-20 in digs, and had a ratio of 33 aces to just three service errors.

A three-time NESCAC All-Academic selection and a team captain, Honea is a versatile defensive player who has over 1,400 career digs and 100 career service aces.

She was an Equity Capitals Markets intern with J.P. Morgan Chase this summer and has an offer to return there post-graduation.

One of the top players in the NESCAC with a team-leading 58 tackles, Sommer is ninth in the conference with 3.5 sacks. He will make his third straight NESCAC All-Academic team this fall and was a 2nd Team All-NESCAC player in 2017.

Around campus, Sommer is an active member of the Amherst community. He has served as a business entrepreneurship intern with the Amherst Careers office, the treasurer of the Amherst Outing Club, and a Big Brother/Big Sister Mentor, while working on the Amherst Finance Trek.

A member of the 2015 NESCAC Championship team, Sommer has worked as an Investment Analyst with Gates Investments, was a semifinalist in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York "Fed Challenge" and a participant in the University of Chicago Quantitative Trading Competiton. He is proficient in Mandarin Chinese and fluent in several computer programming languages. 

The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Football and Volleyball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football and volleyball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. For football, first- and second-team (if applicable) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. Volleyball will recognize first-, second- and third-teams (if applicable).
 
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
 
The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs.
