Keeping Up with the Mammoths: Week 8

Keeping Up with the Mammoths: Week 8

AMHERST, Mass. -- We are only a few weeks away from the Mammoths returning to campus to begin preseason training. Time enough to check out how two female student-athletes advanced in their fields this summer, one of them in their home town and one right here at Amherst!

Julia Ralph, Sophomore, Women's Soccer, San Diego, Calif.

I did neuroscience research at UCSD School of Medicine, focusing on the effects of light on brain serotonin synthesis, one of the neurotransmitters that regulate mood. Our study applies to certain depressive disorders like seasonal affect disorders, where people who live closer to the poles experience less sunlight annually and therefore express certain depressive behaviors.

Jen Chen, Junior, Women's Tennis, East Brunswick, N.J.

This summer I am interning at the Amherst College Investment Office. I am performing research and analysis on the endowment portfolio to study how risk, liquidity, and asset allocation affect short-term and long-term performance. I am learning a lot about the institutional investment management industry as well as the investment world as a whole, but at the same time, I've been able to enjoy a homework-free and summer-y version of Amherst. I've had a great experience so far and am very grateful for this opportunity.
